16 You are to destroy* all the peoples whom Jehovah your God gives over to you.+ You* must not feel sorry for them,+ and you must not serve their gods,+ because that would be a snare to you.+

28 I brought them into the land that I swore to give them.+ When they saw all the high hills and leafy trees,+ they began offering their sacrifices and their offensive offerings. They presented the pleasing* aromas of their sacrifices and poured out their drink offerings there.
