16 Now look! someone came up to him and said: “Teacher, what good must I do to gain everlasting life?”+ 17 He said to him: “Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good.+ If, though, you want to enter into life, observe the commandments continually.”+ 18 He said to him: “Which ones?” Jesus said: “You must not murder,+ you must not commit adultery,+ you must not steal,+ you must not bear false witness,+ 19 honor your father and your mother,+ and you must love your neighbor as yourself.”+ 20 The young man said to him: “I have kept all of these; what am I still lacking?” 21 Jesus said to him: “If you want to be perfect, go sell your belongings and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;+ and come be my follower.”+ 22 When the young man heard this, he went away grieved, for he had many possessions.+

17 As he was going on his way, a man ran up and fell on his knees before him and put the question to him: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit everlasting life?”+ 18 Jesus said to him: “Why do you call me good? Nobody is good except one, God.+ 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder,+ do not commit adultery,+ do not steal,+ do not bear false witness,+ do not defraud,+ honor your father and your mother.’”+ 20 The man said to him: “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth on.” 21 Jesus looked at him and felt love for him and said, “One thing is missing about you: Go, sell what things you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come be my follower.”+ 22 But he grew sad at the answer and went away grieved, for he had many possessions.

25 Now look! a man versed in the Law stood up to test him and said: “Teacher, what do I need to do to inherit everlasting life?”+ 26 He said to him: “What is written in the Law? How do you read?” 27 In answer he said: “‘You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole strength and with your whole mind’+ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”+ 28 He said to him: “You answered correctly; keep doing this and you will get life.”+
