Evidently they understood the Heb. verb to be derived from a similar-looking root that means “to sift; to pass through a sieve.” According to this, M would read: “When the Most High sprinkled the nations [as through a sieve].” This thought runs parallel, or in poetic balance, with the second part of the vs. See VT, Vol. II, 1952, pp. 356, 357.
