a As to “Aryan superiority,” The New York Times of February 17, 1940, quoted a Catholic regent of Georgetown University as saying that “he had heard Adolf Hitler say that the Holy Roman Empire, which was a Germanic empire, must be re-established.” But historian William L. Shirer describes the outcome: “The Third Reich which was born on January 30, 1933, Hitler boasted, would endure for a thousand years, and in Nazi parlance it was often referred to as the ‘Thousand-Year Reich.’ It lasted twelve years and four months.”
