  • 1 Samuel 27:1-12
    New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition)
    • 27 However, David said in his heart: “One day I will perish by Saul’s hand. The best thing for me is to escape+ to the land of the Phi·lisʹtines; then Saul will give up looking for me in all the territory of Israel,+ and I will escape from his hand.” 2 So David rose up with the 600 men+ who were with him and went over to Aʹchish+ the son of Maʹoch, the king of Gath. 3 David stayed with Aʹchish in Gath, he and his men, each man with his household. With David were his two wives, A·hinʹo·am+ of Jezʹre·el and Abʹi·gail+ the Carʹmel·ite, Naʹbal’s widow. 4 When report was made to Saul that David had run away to Gath, he stopped searching for him.+

      5 Then David said to Aʹchish: “If I have found favor in your eyes, let them give me a place in one of the cities of the countryside, so that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?” 6 So Aʹchish gave him Zikʹlag+ on that day. That is why Zikʹlag belongs to the kings of Judah down to this day.

      7 The length of time* that David lived in the countryside of the Phi·lisʹtines was a year and four months.+ 8 David would go up with his men to raid the Geshʹur·ites,+ the Girʹzites, and the A·malʹek·ites,+ for they were inhabiting the land that extended from Teʹlam as far as Shur+ and down to the land of Egypt. 9 When David would attack the land, he preserved neither man nor woman alive,+ but he took the flocks, herds, donkeys, camels, and clothing, after which he would return to Aʹchish. 10 Then Aʹchish would ask: “Where did you make a raid today?” David would reply: “Against the south* of Judah”+ or “Against the south of the Je·rahʹme·el·ites”+ or “Against the south of the Kenʹites.”+ 11 David did not spare alive any man or woman to be brought to Gath, saying: “That they may not tell them about us and say, ‘This is what David did.’” (And that was his practice the whole time he lived in the countryside of the Phi·lisʹtines.) 12 So Aʹchish believed David, saying to himself: ‘He has certainly become a stench among his people Israel, so he will always be my servant.’

    New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition)
    • To the director. A melody of David.

      31 In you, O Jehovah, I have taken refuge.+

      May I never be put to shame.+

      Rescue me because of your righteousness.+

       2 Incline your ear* to me.

      Come quickly to my rescue.+

      Become for me a mountain stronghold,

      A fortified place to save me.+

       3 For you are my crag and my stronghold;+

      For the sake of your name,+ you will lead me and guide me.+

       4 You will free me from the net that they have secretly laid for me,+

      For you are my fortress.+

       5 Into your hand I entrust my spirit.+

      You have redeemed me, O Jehovah, the God of truth.*+

       6 I hate those who are devoted to worthless, vain idols,

      But as for me, I trust in Jehovah.

       7 I will rejoice greatly in your loyal love,

      For you have seen my affliction;+

      You are aware of my deep distress.*

       8 You have not handed me over to the enemy,

      But you make me stand in a place of safety.*

       9 Show me favor, O Jehovah, for I am in distress.

      Anguish has made my eyes weak,+ my whole body* as well.+

      10 My life is consumed with grief+

      And my years with groaning.+

      My strength is waning because of my error;

      My bones grow weak.+

      11 I am scorned by all my adversaries,+

      Especially my neighbors.

      And I am dreaded by my acquaintances;

      When they see me in public, they flee from me.+

      12 I am put out of their heart* and forgotten, as if I were dead;

      I am like a broken jar.

      13 I have heard many evil rumors;

      Terror surrounds me.+

      When they gather together as one against me,

      They scheme to take away my life.*+

      14 But I trust in you, O Jehovah.+

      I declare: “You are my God.”+

      15 My days* are in your hand.

      Rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from those persecuting me.+

      16 Make your face shine upon your servant.+

      Save me by your loyal love.

      17 O Jehovah, may I not be put to shame when I call on you.+

      May the wicked be put to shame;+

      May they be silenced in the Grave.*+

      18 May lying lips become speechless,+

      Lips that speak arrogantly against the righteous, with haughtiness and contempt.

      19 How abundant your goodness is!+

      You have stored it up for those who fear you,+

      And you have shown it before all men, in behalf of those taking refuge in you.+

      20 You will conceal them in the secret place of your presence+

      From the schemes of men;

      You will hide them in your shelter

      From malicious attacks.*+

      21 May Jehovah be praised,

      For in a wonderful way, he has shown his loyal love to me+ in a besieged city.+

      22 As for me, I panicked and said:

      “I will perish from before you.”+

      But you heard my pleas for help when I cried out to you.+

      23 Love Jehovah, all you who are loyal to him!+

      Jehovah protects the faithful,+

      But he repays exceedingly anyone showing haughtiness.+

      24 Be courageous, and may your heart be strong,+

      All you who are waiting for Jehovah.+

    • 12 These were the men who came to David at Zikʹlag+ while he was unable to move about freely because of Saul+ the son of Kish, and they were among the mighty warriors who supported him in battle.+ 2 They were armed with the bow, and they could use both the right hand and the left hand+ to sling stones+ or to shoot arrows with the bow. They were of the brothers of Saul, from Benjamin.+ 3 The head was A·hi·eʹzer, along with Joʹash, both sons of She·maʹah the Gibʹe·ath·ite;+ Jeʹzi·el and Pelʹet the sons of Azʹma·veth,+ Berʹa·cah, Jeʹhu the Anʹa·thoth·ite, 4 Ish·maʹiah the Gibʹe·on·ite,+ a mighty warrior among the thirty+ and over the thirty; also Jeremiah, Ja·ha·ziʹel, Jo·haʹnan, Joʹza·bad the Ge·deʹrath·ite, 5 E·luʹzai, Jerʹi·moth, Be·a·liʹah, Shem·a·riʹah, Sheph·a·tiʹah the Harʹi·phite, 6 El·kaʹnah, Is·shiʹah, Azʹar·el, Jo·eʹzer, and Ja·shoʹbe·am, the Korʹah·ites;+ 7 and Jo·eʹlah and Zeb·a·diʹah the sons of Je·roʹham of Geʹdor.

  • 1 Samuel 28:1, 2
    New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition)
    • 28 In those days the Phi·lisʹtines assembled their armies for war against Israel.+ So Aʹchish said to David: “You know, of course, that you and your men will go out into battle with me.”+ 2 At that David said to Aʹchish: “You surely know what your servant will do.” Aʹchish said to David: “That is why I will appoint you as my permanent bodyguard.”*+

  • 1 Samuel 29:1-11
    New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition)
    • 29 The Phi·lisʹtines+ assembled all their armies at Aʹphek, while the Israelites were camping by the spring in Jezʹre·el.+ 2 And the lords of the Phi·lisʹtines were passing by with their hundreds and their thousands, and David and his men were marching at the rear with Aʹchish.+ 3 But the princes of the Phi·lisʹtines said: “Why are these Hebrews here?” Aʹchish replied to the princes of the Phi·lisʹtines: “This is David, the servant of King Saul of Israel, who has been with me for a year or more.+ I have not found any fault in him from the day he deserted to me until today.” 4 But the princes of the Phi·lisʹtines became indignant at him, and they said to him: “Make the man go back.+ Let him return to the place where you assigned him. Do not let him go down with us into the battle, so that he will not turn against us during the battle.+ For what better way to put himself in favor with his lord than with the heads of our men? 5 Is this not the David about whom they sang when they danced, saying:

      ‘Saul has struck down his thousands,

      And David his tens of thousands’?”+

      6 So Aʹchish+ summoned David and said to him: “As surely as Jehovah is living, you are upright, and I am pleased to have you go on the campaign with my army,+ for I have not found any fault with you from the day you came to me until today.+ But the lords do not trust you.+ 7 So return in peace, and do not do anything to displease the lords of the Phi·lisʹtines.” 8 However, David said to Aʹchish: “Why, what have I done? What fault have you found in your servant from the day that I came to you until today? Why should I not come with you and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?” 9 Aʹchish answered David: “From my standpoint, you have been as good as an angel of God.+ But the princes of the Phi·lisʹtines have said, ‘Do not let him go up with us into the battle.’ 10 Now get up early in the morning with the servants of your lord who came with you; rise up and leave early in the morning as soon as it is light.”

      11 So David and his men rose up early in the morning to return to the land of the Phi·lisʹtines, and the Phi·lisʹtines went up to Jezʹre·el.+

  • 1 Chronicles 12:19-22
    New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition)
    • 19 Some from Ma·nasʹseh also deserted to David when he came with the Phi·lisʹtines to battle against Saul; but he did not help the Phi·lisʹtines, for after consultation, the lords of the Phi·lisʹtines+ sent him away, saying: “He will desert to his lord Saul, and it will cost us our heads.”+ 20 When he went to Zikʹlag,+ these deserted to him from Ma·nasʹseh: Adʹnah, Joʹza·bad, Je·diʹa·el, Miʹcha·el, Joʹza·bad, E·liʹhu, and Zilʹle·thai, heads of the thousands of Ma·nasʹseh.+ 21 They helped David against the marauder band, because all of them were mighty, courageous men,+ and they became chiefs in the army. 22 Day after day people kept coming to David+ to help him until it was a camp as great as the camp of God.+

  • Psalm 5:superscription-12
    New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition)
    • To the director for Neʹhi·loth.* A melody of David.

      5 Listen to my words, O Jehovah;+

      Be attentive to my sighing.

       2 Pay attention to my cry for help,

      O my King and my God, because to you I pray.

       3 O Jehovah, you will hear my voice in the morning;+

      In the morning I will express my concern to you+ and wait expectantly.

       4 For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness;+

      No one bad may remain with you.+

       5 No arrogant person may stand in your presence.

      You hate all those who behave wickedly;+

       6 You will destroy those who speak lies.+

      Jehovah detests violent and deceptive people.*+

       7 But I will come into your house+ because of your great loyal love;+

      I will bow down toward your holy temple* in reverential fear of you.+

       8 Lead me, O Jehovah, in your righteousness because of my foes;

      Make your way clear for me.+

       9 For nothing they say can be trusted;

      Within them is nothing but malice;

      Their throat is an open grave;

      They flatter with their tongue.*+

      10 But God will declare them guilty;

      Their own schemes will cause their downfall.+

      May they be driven away because of their many transgressions,

      For they have rebelled against you.

      11 But all those who take refuge in you will rejoice;+

      They will always shout joyfully.

      You will block approach to them,

      And those loving your name will rejoice in you.

      12 For you will bless anyone righteous, O Jehovah;

      You will surround them with approval as with a large shield.+

  • Psalm 40:superscription-17
    New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition)
    • To the director. Of David. A melody.

      40 I earnestly hoped in* Jehovah,

      And he inclined his ear* to me and heard my cry for help.+

       2 He brought me up out of a roaring pit,

      Out of the slimy mire.

      And he set my feet upon a crag;

      He made my footing secure.

       3 Then he put a new song in my mouth,+

      Praise to our God.

      Many will look on in awe

      And put their trust in Jehovah.

       4 Happy is the man who trusts in Jehovah

      And who does not look to the defiant or to those who are false.*

       5 How many things you have done,

      O Jehovah my God,

      Your wonderful works and your thoughts toward us.+

      None can compare to you;+

      If I were to try to tell and speak of them,

      They would be too numerous to recount!+

       6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,*+

      But you opened up my ears to hear.+

      You did not ask for burnt offerings and sin offerings.+

       7 Then I said: “Look, I have come.

      In the scroll* it is written about me.+

       8 To do your will, O my God, is my delight,*+

      And your law is deep within me.+

       9 I proclaim the good news of righteousness in the great congregation.+

      Look! I do not restrain my lips,+

      O Jehovah, as you well know.

      10 I do not cover over your righteousness in my heart.

      I declare your faithfulness and salvation.

      I do not hide your loyal love and your truth in the great congregation.”+

      11 O Jehovah, do not withhold your mercy from me.

      May your loyal love and your truth constantly safeguard me.+

      12 The calamities surrounding me are too many to count.+

      So many of my errors overwhelm me that I cannot see my way;+

      They are more numerous than the hairs of my head,

      And I have lost heart.

      13 Please be willing, O Jehovah, to save me.+

      O Jehovah, hurry to help me.+

      14 May all those seeking to take my life*

      Be put to shame and disgraced.

      May those who delight in my calamity

      Retreat in humiliation.

      15 May those who are saying to me: “Aha! Aha!”

      Be appalled because of their own shame.

      16 But let those seeking you+

      Exult and rejoice in you.+

      May those who love your acts of salvation always say:

      “May Jehovah be magnified.”+

      17 But I am helpless and poor;

      May Jehovah pay attention to me.

      You are my helper and my rescuer;+

      My God, do not delay.+
