First-Century Silver Mirror

This handheld silver mirror was recovered from the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the year 79 C.E. The surface of a metal mirror was highly polished to reflect a clearer image. However, even a highly polished mirror would not benefit the person who looked into it but failed to make any needed adjustments to his appearance. The disciple James likens God’s Word to a mirror. A Christian could use this figurative mirror to examine his attitude or conduct. But if he were to do so and then neglected to make needed changes, he would not improve. To become a better Christian, he would have to become “a doer” of the word, “not a forgetful hearer.” As he continued to apply what he learned from the Scriptures, he would find inner joy and please his heavenly Father.​—Jas 1:22-25.
