BIBLE CHARACTER
Obadiah—Cultivate Godly Fear
Obadiah was the household steward of wicked King Ahab, the ruler who allowed the evils of Baal worship to fill the land. Yet, Obadiah developed a healthy fear of Jehovah “from his youth.” (1 Ki. 18:1-13) So when Queen Jezebel ordered that all the prophets of Jehovah be killed, Obadiah knew that he had to act courageously to prevent that evil outcome. Concealing just one prophet was dangerous; yet, Obadiah hid 100 prophets and supplied them with food during a severe famine! Imagine how difficult it was to avoid being detected by the hundreds of false prophets serving the king and the queen.—1 Ki. 18:19.
What can we learn from this God-fearing man? Although Obadiah was afraid of Ahab, his fear of God was greater. It gave him the courage to risk his life to protect his brothers. If true worship is banned where we live, we too can cultivate godly fear. This kind of fear will strengthen us to support our brothers and sisters who are facing trials.
