tested quality of your faith: The expression “tested quality” translates a Greek word that refers to testing something to prove whether it is genuine. It was also used regarding the process of refining gold or silver by fire. Only after being refined would such precious metals prove to be truly genuine and pure. This word was used twice in the Greek Septuagint translation to refer to the refining process or to a refining pot. (Ps 12:6 [11:7, LXX]; Pr 27:21) The apostle Peter used it in a similar way regarding faith. (1Pe 1:7) Here James shows that Christians who allow their trials to refine their faith, proving it genuine, can develop another precious quality​—endurance.
