looks at: This translates a Greek verb that means, not to take a quick glance, but “to consider attentively, fix one’s eyes or mind upon,” as one lexicon puts it. (Compare Heb 3:1, where the same verb is rendered “consider”; see study note.) In James’ illustration, the man has carefully examined himself and does see his problem. However, as James goes on to explain, the man fails to act on what he sees.
