My brothers, you are not holding . . . , are you?: Or “My brothers, stop holding to the faith of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with acts of favoritism.”
showing favoritism: James expresses concern that some of his readers are showing special favor to the wealthy or prominent. (Jas 2:2-9) Acts of favoritism are incompatible with “holding to the faith of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.” Followers of Christ have always been “under obligation to go on walking just as that one walked.” (1Jo 2:6) Jesus taught his disciples to treat others impartially regardless of their station in life, and he himself showed no favoritism (Lu 14:12, 13); even his opposers acknowledged this (Mt 22:15, 16). He always acted in harmony with the ways of his Father, who is impartial. (Job 34:19; Joh 12:44, 45; 14:9; Ro 2:11 and study note) God provided the ransom for rich and poor alike. (2Co 5:14, 15) And he never favors people on the basis of their wealth, race, or social status.—Le 19:15; De 1:17; Ac 10:34, 35.
