      “Take that seat there under my footstool”: James here portrays a member of the congregation who is sitting in a comfortable seat with a footstool​—a low stool designed to serve as a rest or support for the feet. When a wealthy visitor enters, the Christian graciously offers to give up his comfortable seat and footstool. But he contemptuously tells a poor visitor to keep standing or to sit on the floor next to the footstool, at the feet of the one sitting in the comfortable chair.​—Compare Mt 23:6 and study note.
