you are convicted by the law as transgressors: James is here continuing his discussion of “the royal law.” (Jas 2:8 and study note; Mt 22:39) The law about neighborly love was first recorded at Le 19:18, and in that same context, Jehovah also prohibited the showing of favoritism. (Le 19:15; see also De 1:17; 16:19.) Christ reaffirmed those laws for his followers, commanding them to love one another and to be impartial. (Mt 22:39; Joh 7:24; 13:34, 35) Here James reminds Christians that since ancient times, Jehovah has always required that his servants be impartial. So those who favored the rich over the poor, for example, were “convicted,” or reproved, for violating one of Jehovah’s long-standing requirements.—See study note on Jas 2:4; compare Ro 13:8; 1Co 13:1-3; 1Jo 4:8.
