the law of a free people: Or “the law that gives freedom.” Lit., “law of freedom.” Here James refers to “the law of the Christ,” “the perfect law that belongs to freedom.” (See study notes on Ga 6:2; Jas 1:25.) It is this law, not the Mosaic Law, that God uses as the basis for judging Christians. In order to be judged favorably, they need to imitate Jesus’ example in the way they speak and act, obeying his teachings. That gives them the prospect of complete freedom from sin and death, something the Mosaic Law could never provide.—Ps 130:3, 4; Joh 8:32, 36; Ro 8:2-4; Ga 5:22, 23.
