  Mercy triumphs over judgment: The context shows that James here speaks of the mercy that Christians are to show toward others. (Jas 1:27; 2:1-9, 14-17) Jehovah commanded his people to show mercy not only by forgiving others but also by helping those in need. (Pr 21:13; Zec 7:9; Mt 5:7 and study note; 12:7; 18:21, 22; compare Lu 10:36, 37.) When rendering an account to God, sinful humans who have been merciful can be confident that he, in turn, will show mercy to them. (Mt 6:12 and study note, 14, 15; 7:2) Thus the merciful conduct of Christians triumphs, or wins out, over any adverse judgment that might have been brought on them.—See study note on Jas 3:17.
