brothers or sisters: James uses the expression “brothers or sisters” to refer to fellow Christians. Although the expression “brothers” was often used to refer to all in the congregation, here he specifically mentions “sisters” as well. (Compare study notes on Ac 1:15; Ro 1:13; 1Co 9:5.) lacking clothing: Lit., “naked.” The Greek word here used (gy·mnosʹ) can have the meaning “lacking adequate clothing,” “poorly dressed.”​—See study notes on Mt 25:36; 1Co 4:11.

enough food for the day: The Greek word here rendered “enough . . . for the day” could refer to “the day’s supply” of food for a particular day. However, it is likely that the word here implies not merely a temporary condition but a constant lack of sufficient daily food. James seems to describe brothers or sisters whose basic needs, such as clothing and food, are not met.
