You have fattened your hearts: Many rich ones fattened their figurative hearts by living solely for pleasure. (Lu 12:19; 21:34) Such overindulgence made them unresponsive and unfeeling toward God and insensitive to the needs of others. (Ps 119:70 and ftn.; Mt 13:15 and ftn.; Ac 28:27 and ftn.) By adding on the day of slaughter, James seems to create a word picture of animals that kept on gorging themselves even on the day when they were to be slaughtered. In a similar way, the wicked would continue to live for pleasure right up to the time when they would be judged adversely by God. (Lu 12:20) In the Hebrew Scriptures, a day of judgment is sometimes referred to as a day of slaughter.—Isa 34:2, 5-8; Jer 12:3.
