if anyone . . . is led astray from the truth: A Christian could be led off course or wander from the truth as a result of tests of faith, false teachings, or his own desires. (Lu 8:13; 2Th 2:3; 2Ti 3:6; Heb 13:9) Such straying could happen gradually. (Compare Heb 2:1 and study note.) The Greek verb here rendered “is led astray” also occurs at Mt 18:12, 13, where it describes a sheep that has strayed from the flock. Jesus indicated that a loving shepherd would make every effort to find that sheep. A person who has strayed from the truth would be in danger of damaging his relationship with Jehovah and ultimately losing out on everlasting life. So James encourages all Christians, especially shepherds in the congregation, to try to bring back anyone who has been “led astray” from the path of truth.
