a The Catechism of the Catholic Church was first published in 1992 and is intended to be an official statement of doctrine for Catholics throughout the world. In the introduction Pope John Paul II describes it as a “sure and authentic reference text for teaching catholic doctrine.” The last time such a universal Catholic catechism was released was in 1566.
