b The ax (Greek, peʹle·kus) was seemingly the traditional instrument of execution in Rome, although by John’s day the sword was more generally used. (Acts 12:2) Therefore, the Greek word here used, pe·pe·le·kis·meʹnon (“executed with the ax”), simply means “executed.”
