They are moderate in the use of alcoholic beverages so as not to leave themselves open to charges of drunkenness or of being a drunkard. One whose senses have been dulled by intoxicating drink easily loses self-control and is not in a position to watch over the spiritual interests of the congregation.

An elder is not quarrelsome or violent but shows proper respect for others, considering them to be superior. He is not self-willed, always insisting that his way or his point of view be accepted. He is not quick-tempered, but he is peaceable in his dealings with others.
