    • Lena Winteler, from Switzerland, says: “When the people arrived, all five of us would go in a group and let them choose their correct conductor.” Endeavoring to imitate Japanese custom, the missionaries would line up slippers to be used by the people who came to the home, but the missionaries did not know the difference between slippers for guests and slippers for the bathroom. One day a student took Lena aside and explained: “We don’t put out toilet slippers for guests.”
