Let us examine the account of one of the resurrections performed by Jesus, as recorded in John chapter 11.

“Jesus gave way to tears.”​—JOHN 11:35.

At times, he too experienced strong emotions that moved him to ‘give way to tears.’ (John 11:35; Luke 19:41; 22:44; Heb. 5:7)

John 11:33-35

Consider, for example, the incident described at John 11:33-35.

When he saw their grief over the death of their brother, Lazarus, “Jesus gave way to tears.” (Read John 11:32-35.)

How does John 11:32-35 show Jesus’ fellow feeling for Martha and Mary?

Why did Jesus give way to tears prior to the resurrection of Lazarus, as described at John 11:35?

It greatly saddened Jesus to see his beloved friends stricken with grief.​—John 11:33, 35.

The Bible says that when Jesus saw those weeping over the death of Lazarus, he “became troubled” and “gave way to tears.” (John 11:33-35, 38)

Because Mary was weeping, Jesus did not talk for long. (John 11:20-28, 32-35)

How do you visualize Jesus’ display of strong emotion as described in verses 33 and 35?

Jesus resurrected at least three persons, thus demonstrating that there is hope for the dead. (Luke 7:11-17; 8:49-56; John 11:1-45)

While dead, Lazarus was unconscious and knew nothing.​—Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10; John 11:17-44.

11:33-36.

Seeing this miracle, many who were there to comfort Lazarus’ sisters, Mary and Martha, put faith in Jesus. (John 11:1-45)

The bereaved may shed tears of grief, even as Jesus wept over the death of Lazarus. (John 11:35)

When we imitate Jesus’ qualities and ways of dealing with others​—for example, his pity for a leper, his empathy for a woman with a grievous illness, his compassion for the bereaved—​we are imitating Jehovah as well. (Mark 1:40, 41; 5:25-34; John 11:33-35)

Jesus shared their pain and cried with them. (John 11:32-36)

Four days later when Jesus arrived, he too “gave way to tears,” even though he knew that he was about to resurrect Lazarus. (John 11:17, 33-35)

He was so moved that a surge of strong empathetic feeling cut him to the heart and brought him to tears.​—John 11:33-36.

Before raising Lazarus to life, Jesus observed the anguish of Lazarus’ sisters and friends, and he “gave way to tears” himself. (John 11:35)

He felt that way even though he knew that he would shortly bring Lazarus back to life. (Read John 11:33-36.)

When he saw his friend Mary and those with her weeping over the death of her brother, Lazarus, Jesus openly “gave way to tears.” (Read John 11:32-35.)

When Jesus saw his friend Mary mourning the death of her brother, Lazarus, Jesus “groaned within himself,” “became troubled,” and “gave way to tears.” (John 11:32-36)

Jesus felt the pain others felt, and he shared their joys. (Luke 10:17, 21; John 11:32-35)

Second, the apostles had witnessed Jesus carry out at least three resurrections​—first at Nain, then at Capernaum, and finally at Bethany. (Luke 7:11-17; 8:49-56; John 11:1-44)

Luke 22-24–John 1-16

Though Jesus knew that he was going to resurrect Lazarus, he felt the pain that was evident among Lazarus’ family and friends. (John 11:32-35, 40-43)

Others include Joseph, David, the apostle Peter, the elders of the congregation in Ephesus, and even Jesus. (Genesis 50:1; 2 Samuel 18:33; Luke 22:61, 62; John 11:35; Acts 20:36-38)

She heard Jesus order that the stone be rolled away from her brother’s tomb.​—John 11:28-39.

So Jesus commands: “Loose him and let him go.”​—John 11:19-44.
