Offerings and sacrifices are dealt with in Leviticus chapters 1 through 7.

Chapters one through seven, and sixteen, of Leviticus deal with various kinds of sacrifices that the Israelites could offer, or were required to offer, in the interests of holiness.

For instance, religious festivals and sacrifices were a required part of true worship in ancient Israel. (Leviticus, chapters 1–7, 23)

¹⁴ Instruction was given through Moses for the various offerings that could be brought to the tent of meeting, some of them community offerings and some of them family or personal offerings; sin offerings for wrongs committed, guilt offerings on account of guilt that in some way might become attached to the offerers; voluntary offerings of thanksgiving and offerings made on the occasions of making some vow before Jehovah. (See Leviticus, chapters 1 through 7.)

So when the Levites were “teaching in Judah, and with them there was the book of Jehovah’s law; and they kept going around through all the cities of Judah and teaching among the people,” they were ministers of God; and when the Levite sons of Aaron offered the sacrifices of incense, grain and animals on Jehovah’s altar in behalf of the people, they were ministers of God.—Deut. 21:5; 33:10; 2 Chron. 17:9; Mal. 2:7; Leviticus chaps. 1-7 and Le 16.

Why was God displeased with offerings that he himself had called for in the Law? (Leviticus 1:1–4:35)

Later, God gladly accepted offerings of grain and other fruits of the ground from many of his worshipers. (Leviticus 2:1-16)

And third, the offerer shared by eating the rest of it. (Leviticus 7:11-36)

Some of the offerings were burned in their entirety on the altar of Jehovah, while others were divided between the priests and the ones presenting the sacrifice, with special portions being offered to Jehovah. (Leviticus 1:3-9; 7:1-15)

Some meat from the communion offering was given to the officiating priest or to other priests. (Leviticus 7:11-38)

The Law stated: “No grain offering that you will present to Jehovah should be made a leavened thing.” (Lev. 2:11)

God’s law to Israel stated: “You must make no sour dough and no honey at all smoke as an offering made by fire to Jehovah.” (Lev. 2:11)

14. So, then, what is needed if we are going to bless Jehovah effectively in the congregated throngs?

¹⁴ So just as it was necessary for thorough preparation to be made before the sacrifices of praise and blessing were offered to Jehovah in ancient Israel, so individual advance preparation needs to be made if we are going to bless Jehovah in the congregated throngs with our whole soul.​—Lev. chaps. 1, 2.

Commenting on another ancient papyrus find, Dr. Paul E. Kahle says: “The papyrus containing fragments of Leviticus ii-v is written in a hand closely akin to that of Papyrus Fouad 266, characterized as already mentioned by the fact that the name of God is rendered by the Tetragrammaton in Hebrew square letters (יהוה) not by κύριος [Kyʹri·os] as later in Christian MSS of the Bible.”​—The Cairo Geniza, 1959 ed., pp. 222, 224.

At the same time they were forbidden to offer sacrifices to demons at their table, as did the surrounding nations, who practiced false religion.—Lev. 7:11-37; 17:5-7; Ex. 24:9-11; Ezek. 44:16.

Now when a peace or communion offering was presented, the blood, fat and vital organs of the victim were offered to Jehovah; the priest officiating at the altar got a prescribed portion, and the offerer and persons with him ate the remainder. (Lev. 3:1-17; 7:11-15, 28-34)

The priest shared in that he (and his family) literally ate the breast and right leg, and the offerer shared by eating the rest. (Lev. 7:11-36)

However, when the Israelites presented peace-offering sacrifices or communion sacrifices, then the Israelites also ate some of the sacrifice. (Lev. 7:11-37)

So salt symbolizes permanence and incorruptibility, and was offered with grain and meat offerings.—Lev. 2:13, 11; Num. 18:19, NW; 2 Chron. 13:5, AS; Ezek. 43:24.

The need of a sacrifice for sins was emphasized in the many sin and trespass offerings and particularly by the offerings made on the day of atonement, all of which were a vital part of the Mosaic law arrangement. (Leviticus, chapters 4-7, 16)
