The Sermon on the Mount appears apparently in two Gospel accounts. (Matthew, chapters 5-7; Luke 6:20-49)

Regarding an objection arising from the fact that Luke omits large portions of the sermon as it appears in Matthew, A. T. Robertson writes in A Harmony of the Gospels for Students of the Life of Christ: “This leaves out of consideration the several large portions of the same matter which Luke has placed elsewhere, or which Jesus repeated on other occasions ([compare] Matt. 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4; Matt. 6:25-34 and Luke 12:22-31).

15. When can we pray, and how should our requests be made?

¹⁵ The Model Prayer that Jesus furnished his disciples helps us to appreciate things of primary importance for us to incorporate in our prayers to the Most High. (Matt. 6:9-13)

The other items mentioned in the prayer relate to the petitioner’s desire to live in God’s favor.​—Matt. 6:9-13.

Of course, it is proper to pray that God will “give us today our bread for this day,” and it is fitting to work industriously to meet real needs. (Prov. 6:6-11; 31:10, 13-24; Matt. 6:11)

But Jesus Christ condemned their actions and said that those self-centered hypocrites were “having their reward in full.” (Matt. 6:1-18)

9, 10. What Scriptural basis do we have for petitioning Jehovah regarding material or physical matters?

⁹ Besides spiritual matters, Jesus showed that it is proper for us to petition Jehovah God for our daily bread, our material needs. (Matt. 6:11)

Then we must be willing to work for it, for “if anyone does not want to work, neither let him eat.” (Matt. 6:11; 2 Thess. 3:10)

This sermon is recorded in Matthew 5:3 to 7:27 and is an outstanding example of Jesus’ teaching men to observe commandments.

In Mt 6 verses 9 through 13 we find what many persons call “the Lord’s prayer.”

In the model prayer he emphasized right matters for which to pray, such as, for God’s name to be sanctified, for God’s kingdom to come, for God’s will to be done on earth and finally for basic necessities of life. (Matt. 6:9-13)

Finally, verbal petitions might be presented for right things needed.—Ps. 33:18, 19; Prov. 30:7-9; Matt. 6:11.

For this reason the New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures does not contain the words even though they are found in Jesus’ formula of the prayer as given in Matthew 6:9-13.

Why Luke omitted the words in Lu chapter 11 verses 2-4 of his account, according to the Vatican Manuscript, we do not know, but the first verse of the chapter Lu 11:1 shows that this rendering of the model prayer was given on a different occasion from that of Matthew chapter six, when Jesus delivered his sermon on the mountain.

¹⁸ Christians properly repeat the model prayer recorded in Matthew, chapter 6, especially that the heavenly Father provide daily bread.
