The Christian apostle Paul verifies the inspired authority of that Bible record in the second chapter of Genesis, saying: “It is even so written: ‘The first man Adam became a living soul.’ . . .

Then, to state the theocratic rule that was to control there in the Paradise of Eden, God followed up Adam’s poetic outburst by saying, in Genesis 2:24: “That is why a man will leave his father and his mother and he must stick to his wife and they must become one flesh.”

Genesis, and especially Ge chapters 1 through 11, has been the favorite target of men who deny God’s willingness to perform miracles.

Chapter 2 of Genesis fills in further details on God’s creating man and woman, and their becoming “one flesh.”

Before the Law covenant with Israel specifically condemned homosexuality, adultery and rape, they realized that sexual unions were to be between man and woman and that such unions were not to be temporary (as in fornication or adultery) but lasting, in a family relationship with the united ones ‘leaving father and mother’ to enter such enduring relationship, as “one flesh.” (Gen. 2:24; note also Joseph’s course; Gen. 39:7-9)

Without statutes against fraud, cheating, slander, false accusation, they could see the bad results that came from the first lie.​—Gen. 1:26–4:16.

They may refer to the fact that the word “God” appears exclusively in the first chapter of Genesis in connection with the account of earthly creation, and that the name Jehovah does not appear until the second chapter of Genesis, beginning with its Ge 2 verse 4.

Thus the editor of the two documents making up the book of Genesis inserted the word Elohím (or God) after the name Jehovah, beginning with the second chapter of Genesis, to form the combination “Jehovah Elohím” or Jehovah God.—See Genesis 2:4, Darby.
