The only use of blood that he authorized was on the altar, in connection with sacrifices. (Leviticus 17:10-12; compare Romans 3:25; 5:8; Ephesians 1:7.)

Anyone eating it will be cut off.” (Leviticus 17:11-14)

Blood could be used on the altar, but otherwise it was to be ‘poured out on the ground as water.’ (Leviticus 17:11-14; Deuteronomy 12:23-25)

Later, Jehovah God made this prohibition part of the Mosaic law. (Lev. 17:12; Deut. 12:23)

God told the Israelites that blood could be used sacrificially on the altar. (Lev. 17:11)

You should pour it out upon the ground.” (Deut. 12:23, 24; Lev. 17:10, 13)

Secondly, if an animal’s blood was not used on the altar, the Israelite was to pour it out on the ground; he thus acknowledged that life is from God and that the blood representing life was not being diverted for some personal use. (Lev. 17:11-14)

 3. What did Leviticus 17:11, 12 say about blood, and so what benefit is it that we get from Jesus’ blood, and how?

³ In God’s covenant with ancient Israel he said the following words, as found in Leviticus 17:11, 12: “The soul [or, life] of the flesh is in the blood, and I myself have put it upon the altar for you to make atonement for your souls, because it is the blood that makes atonement by the soul [life] in it. . . .

For this reason the Bible speaks of the “soul” as being “in the blood.” (Gen. 9:4; Lev. 17:11, 14)

For example, this faithful teaching body has made clear the Bible viewpoint of the sacredness of life and blood and that sacrificial use of blood is the only use of it that is approved by God. (Lev. 17:11-14; Acts 15:20, 29)

However, in four texts translators generally view the Hebrew word as having a meaning beyond its ordinary usage.—Lev. 17:7; 2 Chron. 11:15; Isa. 13:21; 34:14.

At Leviticus 17:7 and; 2 Chronicles 11:15 the term (se‘irim, plural) is used in reference to things to which worship and sacrifice are given in connection with false religion.

Appropriately, Paul mentions both blood and flesh when describing how Jesus gave up his human existence for his disciples, thus opening up the way to gain life in heaven, the “way of entry into the holy place by the blood of Jesus, which he inaugurated for us as a new and living way through the curtain, that is, his flesh.”—1 Tim. 2:5, 6; 1 Cor. 15:45; Deut. 12:23; Lev. 17:11; Eph. 1:7; Heb. 10:19, 20.

At the same time they were forbidden to offer sacrifices to demons at their table, as did the surrounding nations, who practiced false religion.—Lev. 7:11-37; 17:5-7; Ex. 24:9-11; Ezek. 44:16.

Of course, the amount of blood contained in these creatures may be very small, so that it is impossible to pour out their blood; yet that is what was required to make the meat of a creature acceptable for food. (Lev. 17:13)

The Bible is very clear that blood could properly be used only on the altar; otherwise it was to be poured out on the ground. (Lev. 17:11-13)

He presented that to God as a sin-removing ransom sacrifice. (Heb. 13:11, 12; Lev. 17:11-14; 16:14-16)

Any other use of blood by humans has always been forbidden by God.—Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 17:10-12; Acts 15:28, 29.

The Law given to the Israelites required abstinence from blood. (Leviticus 17:13, 14)
