⁷ This symbolic “wild beast” of Revelation chapter 17, which is described as scarlet colored, is really a copy of the original “wild beast” spoken about in Revelation chapter 13.

But what does the “wild beast” of Revelation, chapters thirteen through nineteen, symbolize?

Curiously, an image was made of this sea beast.—Rev. 13:1-7, 14, 15.

¹² Re Chapters 8 to 19 are largely responsible for the reputation that the book Apocalypse, or Revelation, has of being a book foretelling terrifying catastrophes.

In Revelation, chapter 13, it is pictured as a wild beast emerging from the sea.

In chapter thirteen John tells of seeing a wild beast, with seven heads and ten horns, and which blasphemes God and wages war with God’s holy ones.

Also, on one occasion I almost gave up a good job because it involved signing numbered receipts, and I was afraid that I might get mixed up with the dreaded “number of the beast,” mentioned in Revelation, chapter 13.

But what is its image?—Rev. 13:1-18.

¹⁶ Without stopping just now to discuss the many details, nothing stands out more plainly than the issue of rulership and worship as recorded at Revelation, chapters thirteen to fifteen.

⁹ The Revelation received by the apostle John warned that the world of mankind that is alienated from God would make increasing demands shortly before its end, putting “under compulsion all persons, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, that they should give these a mark in their right hand or upon their forehead, and that nobody might be able to buy or sell except a person having the mark.” (Revelation 13:16, 17)

The “wild beast” is symbolic, as earlier shown in Revelation chapter 13, the “image” of it being described in Re chapter 17, where we are told that the seven heads of the “beast” represent seven ‘mountainlike’ kingdoms.
