There Paul was able to help Crispus, “the presiding officer of the synagogue,” to become a disciple.

The account states: “Crispus . . . became a believer in the Lord, and so did all his household.

But Crispus the presiding officer of the synagogue became a believer in the Lord, and so did all his household.

Had those Jews turned Christian and been baptized by Paul as Crispus and his household had, they would have stayed far away from Jerusalem and Judea, especially after Roman Cestius Gallus had surrounded the doomed city with his armies for a short siege, in 66 (A.D.).

After the apostle Paul preached to the Jews in Corinth, proving that Jesus is the Christ, says the Bible, “Crispus the presiding officer of the synagogue became a believer in the Lord, and so did all his household.

Paul baptized Crispus, Gaius, and the household of Stephanas.

His murder was followed by the execution of Constantine’s own firstborn son, Crispus, who was dealt with by his stepmother Fausta because he seemed to be an obstruction to her own offspring’s total power.

Probably it was frequented by many dear friends—Stephanas and his family, the first Christians in the province of Achaia, baptized by Paul himself; Titius Justus, who allowed Paul to use his house to deliver discourses; and Crispus, the presiding officer of the synagogue, who accepted the truth along with all his household. (Acts 18:7, 8; 1 Corinthians 1:16)

The book of Acts also mentions other strong Christian households, including those of Lydia, Crispus, and the jailer of Paul and Silas.​—Acts 16:14, 15, 32-34; 18:8.

Many (including the synagogue’s former presiding officer Crispus and his household) became baptized believers.

Far from being a true Christian, Constantine soon found reason to kill his eldest son, Crispus, and his own wife, Fausta.

Some were of Jewish background, including Crispus who was the presiding officer of the Jewish synagogue when Paul first arrived in Corinth. (Acts 18:8)

When Paul preached in Corinth, Crispus, who had served Jehovah as “the presiding officer of the synagogue,” became a believer along with his household and was among many Corinthians that were baptized.

In the verses before, Paul mentioned that he baptized Crispus, Gaius and the household of Stephanas. (1 Cor. 1:14-16)

Even as the apostle Paul years later wrote regarding his own case: “I am thankful I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name.”—1 Cor. 1:14, 15.
