Therefore, some things, such as the capture of Hebron by Caleb (Jos 15:13, 14; Jg 1:9, 10), Debir by Othniel (Jos 15:15-19; Jg 1:11-15), and Leshem, or Laish (Dan), by the Danites (Jos 19:47, 48; Jg 18:27-29), could likewise have taken place before Joshua’s death.

So, a second conquest or “mopping up” operation was effected at Debir by Othniel, who, because of distinguishing himself in the city’s conquest, was given Achsah, the daughter of veteran warrior Caleb, as a wife.​—Jos 15:13-19; Jg 1:11-15.

Caleb then gave his daughter, at her request, the Upper and the Lower Gulloth as a wedding present, in addition to the “piece of land to the south.”​—Jos 15:13-19; Jg 1:11-15; 3:9-11.

Othniel was “the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.” (Jg 1:13; 3:9; Jos 15:17)

Achsah’s father Caleb had promised her to the conqueror of the city. (Jos 15:16-19; Jg 1:11-15)

The moʹhar could also be in the form of service. (Ge 29:15-30; Jos 15:16)

The bride was occasionally given a present by her father as “a parting gift,” and sometimes, as in the case of Rebekah, the bride was presented with gifts at betrothal.​—1Ki 9:16; Jos 15:17-19; Ge 24:53.

The distribution of the land of Canaan proceeded initially from Gilgal (Jos 14:6–17:18) and was completed from Shiloh.​—Jos 18:1–21:42.

These, and 42 other cities and their surrounding agricultural land, were allotted to the tribe of Levi.​—Jos 13 to 21.

When Achsah left for her new home, she requested and received from her father an additional choice gift, a section containing the Upper and Lower Gulloth. (Jos 15:15-19; Jg 1:12-15)

The tribe itself was divinely designated to take the lead in the fight against the Canaanites, and it did so in association with the Simeonites. (Nu 13:6, 30; 14:6-10, 38; Jos 14:6-14; 15:13-20; Jg 1:1-20; compare De 33:7.)

Priests and Levites had cities with pasture grounds. (Jos 15-21)

The book of Joshua gives a detailed discussion of this, the word “lot(s)” occurring more than 20 times in chapters 14 to 21.

The initial steps or proposals were generally made by the parents of the young man, but sometimes by the father of the girl, especially if there was a difference of rank.​—Jos 15:16, 17; 1Sa 18:20-27.

When the various tribes received their land inheritance in the Promised Land (Jos 13-19), there was no “tribe” of Joseph.

The account of the division of the territory W of the Jordan shows that first the lots for Judah (Jos 15:1-63), Joseph (Ephraim) (Jos 16:1-10), and the half tribe of Manasseh settling W of the Jordan (Jos 17:1-13) were determined, their boundaries and cities being enumerated.

Besides these, there were pockets of resistance scattered throughout the land, some of which were later captured by the inheriting tribes of Israel, while others remained unconquered or were allowed to remain and made to perform forced labor for the Israelites.​—Jos 15:13-17; 16:10; 17:11-13, 16-18; Jg 1:17-21, 27-36.

A daughter was the property of her father until he gave her in marriage (Jos 15:16, 17; 1Sa 18:17, 19, 27), and as such she could even be used as security or sold into slavery, though not to a foreigner. (Ex 21:7-10; Ne 5:2-5)
