This sermon is recorded in Matthew 5:3 to 7:27 and is an outstanding example of Jesus’ teaching men to observe commandments.

“If your righteousness does not abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter into the kingdom of the heavens.”​—MATTHEW 5:20.

Jesus certainly was not unhappy in his service, and it was he who said: “Happy are those who are conscious of their spiritual need, since the kingdom of the heavens belongs to them.” (Matt. 5:3, NW)

The Sermon on the Mount appears apparently in two Gospel accounts. (Matthew, chapters 5-7; Luke 6:20-49)

To find the answer, let us briefly consider the Sermon on the Mount, a discourse delivered by Jesus on a mountain in Galilee.​—Matthew 5:1, 2.

¹⁴ Jesus’ famous sermon on the mount would not take more than twenty minutes to give as recorded in Matthew 5:1 to 7:27, but it has lasted for nineteen centuries and has been equaled by no sermon since!

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus Christ said: “Everyone divorcing his wife, except on account of fornication, makes her a subject for adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” (Matt. 5:32)

But the sense in which Jesus used the word porneía at Matthew 5:32 and Mt 19:9 must be ascertained from the context.
