“Let the Peace of the Christ Rule in Your Hearts”

Colossians 3:15 mentions “the peace of the Christ.” What is “the peace of the Christ”? It involves the inner calm that a person can gain as a disciple of Christ. That sort of peace comes from knowing that we are loved by Jehovah and his Son.​—John 14:23, 27.

The apostle Paul urged Christians in the Colossian congregation to let this sort of peace rule in their hearts, or their inner person. How so? The Greek word that Paul used here for “rule” is related to the word for an umpire in a sporting event. Does this not suggest that “the peace of the Christ” should have the final say in our hearts?

For instance, when a disagreement arises with a fellow believer, we are to let “the peace of the Christ” be the “umpire.” It will help us to decide what we can do to preserve peace and unity. When we follow that course, even if it means setting aside personal preferences or grievances, we show that we are letting “the peace of the Christ” rule in our hearts.​—Col. 3:12-14.
