the fine name: Jesus Christ’s name was linked to his disciples in that they “were by divine providence called Christians.” (Ac 11:26) Jesus was sent by Jehovah, so Christians were by extension also associated with Jehovah’s name. Furthermore, the phrase by which you were called reflects a common Hebrew idiom. Commenting on this expression as used in the Hebrew Scriptures, one reference work states: “When God calls a name over someone, it means that this person becomes God’s possession and has a special relationship to him.” (De 28:10; Jer 14:9; Am 9:12; compare Ac 15:17 and study note.) Christians were in a special relationship with both Jesus and Jehovah. Yet, those first-century disciples were often persecuted by the rich class, who sought to harm their reputation, thus blaspheming “the fine name by which [they] were called.”​—Ac 5:17, 18; 26:9-11; compare 1Pe 4:14, 16.
