A spring does not cause the fresh water and the bitter water to bubble out of the same opening: In this verse and in the following one, James uses three powerful illustrations to support the point that he has just made: “It is not right” for a Christian to use his mouth to utter both healthful speech and harmful speech. (Jas 3:10) First, he contrasts water that is “fresh,” or clear and drinkable (lit., “sweet”), with water that is “bitter,” or distasteful and unsafe to drink. (Compare Ex 15:23; Re 8:11.) A spring would not alternate between producing drinkable and undrinkable water. It would yield either one or the other. Thus James suggests that it would be unnatural and, by implication, even hypocritical for a Christian to use his mouth to utter both healthful speech and harmful speech.
