Those now gathered as replacements were not invited in the sense that the original invitees had been. In the corresponding illustration given by Jesus, in Luke 14:15-24, when the third and final call for guests is made, the householder who spreads the “grand evening meal” says to his slave:

For I say to you people, None of those men that were invited shall have a taste of my evening meal.”​—Luke 14:23, 24.
