Abalobi bamaVangeli bathi ngemva kokuba uJosefa wase-Arimatheya esusé isidumbu sikaJesu esigxotsheni, isidumbu sasongwa “ngelineni elicolekileyo elihlanzekile.” (Mathewu 27:57-61; Marku 15:42-47; Luka 23:50-56) Umphostoli uJohane uyenezela: “UNikodemu . . . naye weza elethe umqulu wemure nenhlaba, amaphawundi acishe abe ikhulu ako. Ngakho basithatha isidumbu sikaJesu basibopha ngamabhandeshi kanye neziqholo, ngayo kanye indlela yenkambiso yamaJuda yokulungiselela ukungcwaba.”—Johane 19:39-42.
Kwakuyisiko lamaJuda ukugeza isidumbu abese esebenzisa amafutha neziqholo ukusigcoba. Njengoba uJohane ekhuluma ngokuqondile ngamabhandeshi nangendwangu yekhanda, wayengeke yini akhulume ngelineni ecolekileyo, noma indwangu, ukube yayikhona lapho?
Ngaphezu kwalokho, cabangela lokhu: Ukube izindwangu uJesu angcwatshwa ngazo zazinomfanekiso wakhe, zazingeke yini ziqapheleke futhi kukhulunywe ngazo? Nokho, ngaphandle kwalokho okusemaVangelini, akukhulunywa lutho eBhayibhelini ngezindwangu angcwatshwa ngazo.
Ngisho nabalobi ababethi bangamaKristu bekhulu lesithathu nelesine, abaningi ababhala ngezinto eziningi okwakuthiwa izimangaliso eziphathelene nezinsalela eziningi, abakhulumanga lutho ngokuthi kwakukhona indwangu eyayinomfanekiso kaJesu. Lokhu kunzima ukukuqonda, njengoba ngokwesazi esingumJesuit uHerbert Thurston, izingqapheli zekhulu le-15 nele-16 “zichaza ukuthi imifanekiso esendwangwini yayinemibala ecace kangangokuba kungenzeka yayisanda kwenziwa.”
